Ways Your Congregation Can Get Involved In The Habitat Ministry
- PRAY for the Habitat ministry.
- Ask God to show you how you might help.
- Ask God to equip, empower, and stimulate your church for a major involvement in Habitat. Meditate about Matthew 25:31-46.
- INVITE a Habitat speaker to share the news of Habitat, and some of the ways your congregation might be involved. Call Lou Brakeman, chair of Church Relations, at 386-774-5086 or e-mail at Lbrakema@earthlink.net, or call Executive Director Peter deVos at 386-734-7268.
- BUDGET an annual donation to West Volusia Habitat to help with operational costs.
- PARTICIPATE in special events as they are announced, or organize your own to raise funds and spread the word -- a Walk for Habitat, a T-shirt sale, a carry-in supper, a concert.
- ORGANIZE a collection day for usable items that can be transported to the Bargain Barn or encourage members to donate furniture, household items, clothing, etc., regularly. Organize a work party monthly to help sort items or as needed. Call to arrange a time: 386-734-7268.
- SHARE THE WORD. Establish a literature rack with Habitat news, include Habitat news items in your church newsletters and worship guides, and invite informed members to give a mission message during worship.
VOLUNTEER - VOLUNTEER - VOLUNTEER
Some specific ways church members can become volunteers for Habitat:
- Help build a house. Individuals can help. A group such as an adult church school class can arrange a work morning. One class has learned how to put up vinyl siding. Another has shingled a roof. Another does the major painting on each house. Call Peter deVos at 386-734-7268 for building schedules. Normally we build from 8 AM until Noon, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, but groups may arrange other hours.
- Building supervisors are needed. If you have experience in construction, Habitat needs you. We use supervisors for particular parts of a build and for an entire house. We need supervisors for framing, roofing, and tiling floors, as well as electricians and plumbers. Give Peter deVos a call.
- Work at The Bargain Barn. Our thrift store on Rte. 15A needs people to check in donations, sort and hang clothes, work as cashiers, etc. There is a special need for drivers and others to help pick up and deliver heavy items. Organize a work party for the Barn on a Saturday when major organizing occurs. Call the Habitat Office.
